What is Slip?

In the context of oil and drilling equipment , a slip is a critical tool used to grip, suspend, and secure tubulars such as drill pipes, casings, or drill collars during drilling operations.
Its primary function is to prevent these heavy tubulars from slipping or falling into the wellbore, ensuring safety and stability during processes like tripping (raising or lowering the drill string) or well completion. Slips typically feature a segmented, cone-shaped design with hardened inserts (called "slip teeth") that bite into the outer surface of the tubular, creating a secure hold.

1.Rotary Slips

Rotary slips can accommodate drill pipe from 2 3/8-7in(60.3-177.8mm)O.D. They Are classified as type Ultra-Short(SDS-S),short(SDS),Medium(SDML) and Extra Long(SDXL) according to gripping length.SDS-S slips and SDS slips are designed for shallow drilling,SDML slips are the perfect choice for all medium depth drilling,SDXL slips are designed for deep drilling.

3.Drill Collar Slips

There are three types of DCS Drill Collar Slips: S, R and L. They can accommodate drill collars from 3in(76.2mm) to 14in(355.6mm) O.D.. The handling sizes can be adjusted by changing the quantity of inserts or slip body. They are designed and manufactured according to API Spec 7K.

There are three types of DU Series Rotary Slips: DU, DUL and SDU. They are with large handling range and light weight. Therefore, these slips have larger contact area on the taper and heat-treated for strength and wear resistance. They are designed and manufactured according to API Spec 7K.

8.UC-3 Casing Slips

Casing Slips Type UC-3 are multi-segment slips with of 3in/ft on the diameter taper slips(except size 8 5/8").Every segment of one slip is forced equally while working.Thus the casings could keep a better shape.They should work together with spiders and insert bowls with same taper.The slips are designed and manufactured according to API Spec 7K.

9.Type B Rotary Slips

There are three model of type B rotary slips(woolley style):B short,B Long and X Long.

1.Drill Pipe Slips

Used during tripping operations (raising or lowering the drill string) to grip and suspend drill pipes-hollow, high-strength pipes that transmit drilling fluid and rotational force from the surface to the drill bit. They secure the drill pipe in the rotary table or casing head, preventing downward slippage while crew members connect or disconnect pipe sections (makeup/breakout).  

2.Casing Slips
